At 19¾ miles, the West Somerset Railway used to be Britain’s longest independent railway.

When the narrow gauge (1’ 11½”) Welsh Highland Railway extention to Porthmadog opens in 2011 it will exceed the length of the WSR. I am having trouble finding an accurate length as reports seem to vary but it appears to be about 25 miles.

When complete the WHR will join the Ffestiniog Railway at Porthmadog Harbour station and it will be theoretically possible to have a continuous run of almost 40 miles.

However, there are no immediate plans to run through trains on a regular basis as the WHR has a larger loading gauge than the FR.

The West Somerset Railway is now Britain’s longest standard gauge (4’ 8½”) independent railway.
