On Saturday 16 April, David Allan, Chairman of Ian Allan Publishing with other judges from the National Railway Heritage Awards, will formally unveil the Ian Allan Publishing Heritage Railway of the Year award that the Helston Railway won in December. The ceremony will take place at 2pm at the new Trevarno Station which is within Trevarno Gardens and Estate. Normal admission fees will apply.
Stuart Walker, Director of the Helston Railway Preservation Company Limited said:
“We are thrilled to have received this award and it is a fantastic recognition of the work of our volunteers and the assistance – both financial and otherwise – from our Supporters, Shareholders and Trevarno Estate. We won the award after unannounced visits by the team of judges to Trevarno. The Judges were impressed with how far we had progressed in such a short space of time and by the passion, commitment and enthusiasm they saw in our volunteers during their visit. I congratulate everyone who has been involved – both now and in the past – with the Helston Railway Restoration Project and this Award is recognition of everything you have done.”
After the unveiling, the Judges will meet volunteers and be shown around the station. The plans for re-opening the next section of the line to Truthall Halt and in the longer term onwards to Helston itself will be discussed. One of the railway’s two Ruston Diesel Shunters will also be providing demonstration runs on the day. The railway has laid around half a mile of track as well as building the new Trevarno station platform and has planning permission to lay a further half mile.
